Description

This book is divided into two units each of which describes the history of Kannada language tracing its routes from two different hypothesized proto languages. The first unit traces the history of the language from Proto-Dravidian, which is said to be the root of the modern Dravidian languages such as Kannada, Telugu, Tamil etc. The second unit traces the development of the modern dialects of Kannada from Proto-Kannada, which is hypothesized to be the root of the Kannada language.

In the western nations, describing the history of a language by tracing its origin from a hypothesized proto language has been the standard practice for a long time now. But in Kannada, such kind of research is very few in number. In fact, describing Kannada’s history based on various written forms and sources is more common. This book also describes these two different methods of linguistic research, lists the pros and cons of each and shows how one can complement the other.
