The purpose of this monograph is mainly to differentiate between two different kinds of referring expressions called names and descriptions, both from the linguistic and the philosophical points of view. Some important facts about this distinction have been newly uncovered in this monograph.
After establishing this distinction between names and descriptions, the monograph tries to re-interpret two other distinctions that are connected with it, namely (1) the distinction between common names and proper names and (2) the distinction between referential and non-referential uses of nominal expressions.
